Arrested While Grieving

Wow! Last night Mr. Aron sent me an article from the New York Times. You can access it by clicking below:

http://select.nytimes.com/2007/05/26/opinion/26herbert.html?ex=1180497600&en=cb0157896405f41c&ei=5121&emc=eta1

For today's blog entry, I simply want you to respond to this article. What does it make you feel? What does it make you think of? Do you agree with Rob Herbet's point of view? What can you do about it?

Please seriously consider before you write and remember to proofread and use perfect mechanics.

Thanks,

This is something that is very much happening to all the black and hispanic minorities. This just makes you feel unsafe even if there are cops around, because if they are harrassing you for no reason this means they just don't care about anything that happens to you. This just makes you think of all the things that have happen where there have been no unlawful acts made and people being arested for no reason. I definitely agree with Rob Herbet, and I think that something has to be done about it. I really dont know what can be done, but do something.

I can't believe how disorganized the police department can be.
This not only happens to black or hispanic people, it happens to all the different races except for the white community.
I mean, these kids were sad and angry about their friend's death. Anybody would feel that way, put yourselfves in these kids shoes, wouldn't you do the same thing?
I really don't know why this is happening. I thought we were suppossed to stay together as a community with grieving and to have peaceful lives.. I think that our ancestors are crying right now. :(

I think that some police are just power hungry because they know that they have power over us and some are discussed with how some police are acting around the world so they know they we are going to Rebelled Against there words.

I feel like those children did nothing wrong and that some police are abusing their power as enforcers of the law to wrongly arrest people basd on their assumptions. this article made me think of if I was in this situation what would I do. you c annot run or you would be charged with resisting arrest and if you try to get away and push them you would be cherged with assaulting a police officer, so basically you feel helpless and your only option is to be taken to the pricent. the only thing you can do is gather some people together talk about it.

This article maks me feel like the police really descriminates against the black and hispanic community. i Agree with rob herbert's point of view because, I live in Bushwick and i see things like this every day just happen to innocent people I really think he makes a good point when he mentions that things like this never happen in the good parts of Manhhatan. Polotics have been promising changes over many years and still everything stays the same in my opinion people are going to have to come together change this on their own because this a big problem not only in Bushwick but in any community were blacks and hispanics live

The article by Rob Herbet makes me very angry and sad. I feel there is no reason for the actions of the police. I am aggravated by the fact that so many Black and Hispanic people are harrassed by police, and there is absolutely nothing they can do at that point. I completely agree with Rob Herbet's point of view, I do not think police should harass, intimidate, humiliate, and arrest people for no reason. The act of the police makes me think of the Civil Rights Movement. There is not much that can be done at the exact moment. However, I think people should start speaking against it and fight for the rights that have been earned in this nation.

It makes me feel very upset to see how policemen with higher power abuse this privilege in doing wrong. it makes me think of bush and his wrongful doings,
selfishness with the war. I do agree with Mr.Herbert's opinion i do not like it at all. I can't do anything because it makes no sence to waste my time writing the city because they'll never do anything about it. They never do when it comes to one of their own city workers. Desiree

The article in which I read makes me feel unsafe. Why? Because many black and hispanic are blamed for something they didn't do. Just like my classmate Jonathan Hance said the police are Power hungry.
They know that they have the power to do what ever they feel like doing. They also know that most people don't like them unacount on the way they act. I agree with Rob Herbet's point of view, I think that it is time for the police harassment to stop, for blacks and hispanics. There is nothing i can do by myself, but with a group of others we can make a difference.

I can't believe this happening around our area. This puts me to think , Is this ever going to happen to me , my friends or my family?.Just because of our ethnicity.I defenitly disagree with madness!.Its also obvious that I agree with Rob Herbet's point of view . I think our community has to get together and make a change . Teenagers in high schools should take action against this harrasment.

I strongly agree with Rob herbet's point of view. The way cops make there own excuses to arrest and harass people in the streets is out of control.Cops drive around here breaking laws too but they don't arrest one another, they cover up for eachother. Cops run lights ,start street fights and they dont get in touble for it , but then again when a hispanic or a black person does it all hell breaks lose because the police station sends in a team of cops like they are about to start a war. I think they have no respect for the lost one because if they did they would have never arrested his mourners and wouldn't have stated that the murder was gang-related without evidence. I think that before cops correct ower rights as citizens they should correct theirs first.

Well i bet the police would not arrest them if they wouldnt have been doin nothing. Every one knows that when u have a large group of people there is always one that tries to act stupid and for that person everyone pays.

Cops dont care about you. They are just bored sitting in a car all day and just want to be in action. This is racist but in a legal way and it needs to stop. Thats what I think

To me this article is sad yet more than true.Personally I feel as america as a whole has been over looking police harassment for the longest.Think about police harassment has been going on for more than a while now, and when people bring there concerns to a higher authiority all they do is turn their backs. How is it that America stands for a freedom of speech when you can't even come outside in certain clothing because you'll be judged and harassed because of it. This all doesnt make any type of sense to me how are you suppose to go to the police for help when your scared of them. I thought a policemans job was to help others not to judged and harass t hem due to personal opinions, and feelings.

This article makes me feel angry cause ive beened one of the victim in some cases. This has happened to me lots of times. I've beened harassed by the cops in many ocasion. They sereach me for no reason. They tell me I know you got something on u. I agree with Rob Herbet point of view cause its true I expereinced this harassment. After reading this article, I feel that the police take much advatage of how their jobs are supposed to work. I think that it was unfair for the police officers to arrest these kids because of their assumptions, especially on a day that these kids were grieving!! I also agree with Bob Herbert, when he says that you would never see the police making these assumptions and taking these actions when they see a majority of kids walking around Manhattan. On top of that, these officers then made up excuses after they realized they were the wrong ones, maybe they knew they were wrong the whole time. Cops just take advantage of the actions they are capable to do just because they have that blue uniform on.

I feel like just because police men got the authority to do what they do it makes them feel like if day arrest a black or hispanic person people are going to believe anything they say about us because of our reputation or just because of were we live at. I agree with Rob Herbet's point of view. What we can do about its talk to people fight against them fight for our rights because we know is not fair they know its not fair and they should'nt have people (police men) like that working or the city when they suppose to make life easier, fight crime not commite them.

This makes me fell very dissapointed because it makes me feel like our brothers sacrafice against racism was in vain. This article is an example of how the police take advantage of their power and abuse our human rights. They went too far on the assumption of thinking those kids had done something wrong they had no right to treat them like animals to take trhem to the precent. They should of use a polite way to take them and aske the questions they need it to kill their missed judge assumptions. ***sthefany capellan***

This article written by Bob Herbert based on police brutality towards minorities. I don't think it's right that teenagers be arrested for going to the train station to be on their way to or from a friends wake. They were minding their own buisness and not even causing a ruckuss, like the article said you dont' see these incidents occurring in park or 5th avenue. It's like the police have a radar for minorities and as soon as they spot someone of a different enthnicity other than caucasion they immediately a criminal or accused of something they didn't do or even have the intentions of doing. Many of the kids arrested by the police on Monday went to school even had notes allowing them to leave school early or not go at all to attend the wake. So there was no reason why or evidence to incriminate the teens for supposedly being in a gang or whatever the police had to comment on them about. They were just innocent people that the NYPD chose to take advantage of because of their race or color.

Since the police department have more authority and power over the public, it is why they can do these type of things. Even though it is wrong to do so, little can be done about it. I think hispanics and black people have this reputation in the community. I agree with Herbet's point of view. He is speaking up for all of us.

The article really got to me. I agree 100% with Bob Herbert. The police station has relly gone far this time. What they are doing to these kids is unfair and uncalled for. I mean yes, Teenagers these days tend to Be involved in unecessary things but others aren't and what happened a couple of days ago isn just letting teenagers now know what the government, cops percisely, think of them. This article made me feel veryangry because of the way cops are acting toward these hurt kids.

This article by Rob herbet's make me feel angry and sad. The reasons that makes me feel this way is that it happening around our area. Black and hispanics people are being harrased just cuz the simple fact of their race and their is nothing they could do about it. This exclude the white community, because they think they are better than the others. I totally agree with Rob Herbet's because something has to be done to end all of this descrimination towards us. I don't know what but something needs to be done. We should start fighting to earn respect.

Tamara >>This kind of treatment happens very often to black and hispanic people the new york city police department think that just because they are police they can do whatever they think they want just because they are part of the law, which i strongly feel is not right. i feel that the police department needs to become more organized with there job and learn to not treat people differently for what there race is or how they look they must certainly not judge a book by its cover and thats what police men do.
I strongly agree with Bob Herbert point of view, i think this is a good thing because if people protest about it, it may change in the way the police department works.

I know the person who got shot and I know people who attended the wake and got arrested. My friend "D" got arrested attending the wake and was held overnight. I think it's messed up how things went down that day being that many people were mourning the lost of a friend. I think discrimination and racism need to be stopped. It's unfair to the people and although it's good to know the police were trying to stop gang violence they shouldn't of arrested so many people for doing nothing. The cops should of just been more aware and paid more attention to everyone to make sure nothing got started but they went about everything wrong.

That kind of stuff happen to me when i come from school. Its like these kids know who are weak from strong. If i dont give em something thats will fight me.if i do they will leave me alone..But if i did give them money they will leave but come back someday when we cross paths and ask for more.

this article makes me feel that although the main purpose we have police officers is to make us feel safe they still tend to harass certain people based on how they look and the certain area they live in.They assume that just because we live in a urban neighborhood that makes us "bad" people in the eyes of society. If the police are harassin us then what sense does it make to have them there in the first place. To me I feel that the kids thet were arrested did absolutly nothing wrong because whats wrong about mourning over a friend that was killed, this is a very serious issue and it had been around for a while already and to me it doesnt seem like its getting any better

Somebody told me about this story. This is not fair. They said that the T-shirts that say R.I.P. were "evidence of gang membership". That is a way to pay respects to the deceased person. There is no gang named R.I.P.-that really doesn't makes sense. The cops are abusive sometimes, for no reason at all. They are aways picking on Black/Hispanic people just because we are minorities. If everybody is supposed to be treated equally (and they're not treating us like other people), then doesnt that make the cops go against the law?

Anonymous said...

Well i agree with this statment because in my behalf it true there is sometimes that teenager get abuse by cope. This is moslty happening to hispanic and black teen. They are harrass, handcuffed, crused at, and even murderd by cope. This make me disoppointed because i know how it feel because few month ago i got stop by police because they thought i was selling drugs or was carried them. Just because i have came out of a building they had been watching.''I heard that man not support to padd you down if you a women''.It has been happening around the community.I think that police office take there power to upper level and take advantage of this matter. Most of time these kids getting stop are not found no guilty or for no reason getting stop.i definitely agree with ''Rob Herbet's. Personally, I am disgusted at the way police have acted toward minorities over the years. From poilice brutality to unlawful arrets, police have gone mad with power. They push you to to do things that will get you arretsed. And if somehow u resist they'll arrest you anyways and make something up. We live in fear of the "boys" (Cops) because no matter how much right we do, the cops just see the wrong. There is really nothing that can be done because the ones that have tried, dead, in jail or in trouble with the law. I agree with Rob Herbet's point of view because it is the point of view of most people living in Bushwick, including myself.

IN DAYS LIKE TODAY, PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT OUTCOMES AND DIFFERENT BACKROUNDS ARENT GETTING THE RESPECT THAT THEY DESERVE. YOU CANT REALLY RELY ON COPS BECAUSE THE WAY THEY ACT TOWARDS US.. MAKES US FEEL UNSAFE AND TO THINK THAT WE CANT DEPEND ON THEM. COPS THAT HARASSE CITIZENS OF AMERICA FOR NO GOOD REASON..JUST SHOWS THAT THEY WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU..THEY'LL PROBABLY BE THERE TO MAKE YOU LOOK WORSE. I AGREE WITH ROB HERBET BECAUSE SITUATIONS SUCH AS THESE HAPPENS VERY OFTEN AT TIMES FOR BLACKS AND HISPANICS, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE, AND IT NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW, BEFORE IT GETS WORSE.

This is very true what Rob herbert is talking about. Mostly because I as a teen have expieriance the same thing in this community. I most strongly feel that someone should do something about it and that somebody is us. If we dont do something about this officers will feel like they have the right to abuse their authority.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Rob Herbet's point of view because I have been a witness of the police abuse of power in a few of occasions. Something like this happened to DeEbonie' last year also. It makes me feel angry at the way hispanics and blacks have been treated by the police for no apparent reasons other than prejidice and stereotype. The people that fall into the catergories that are being mistreated should stand up for their rights by doing a peaceful protest, or several so that people could become aware of this injustice.

This article is to let the public be aware of what the minorities,be it black or hispanic experince. It personally makes me feel like I are less of a person. For some reason this is very much expected. It does not come as a surprise. It makes me think back to the experience of Malcolm x where he commited a crime but actually did more time because he was of a minority and slept with a white woman. this was many years ago and yet it is still going on. This means that something needs to be done IMMEDIATLY!!! To help change this i would like all people of the minority to stick together. So i do agree with Rob Herbet's piont of view. The fact of the matter is, we let things like this happen because we dont help each other. Instead we kill each other off. If the people of theses races that are being targeted need to help one another and be the true meaning of unity. catina

You started me off Ro. Oh boy! Here she goes.
Well, I think this just clarifies what I've been saying for the longest time now. I'm so happy that someone also feels the way I do, about how black cops have joined in with the white cops in their uneccessary procedures. I witnessed this first-hand. There is so much racism within the police community and black people can either join to get ahead or stay loyal to their people. It's a hard decision and not everyone knows the right one. Black people feel betrayed when their own become cops. Why>? As far as teenagers go, we don't trust cops specifically for this reason. but I guess that's the way the city works.
